Center for Planetary Health and Innovation SciencePHIS

At the Center for Planetary Health and Innovation Science (PHIS) at Hiroshima University, we are committed to advancing research and education that promotes the health of people, society, and the planet.

Planetary Health is an emerging global framework that recognizes the interdependence of human health, social systems, and the natural environment. In an era of complex global challenges such as climate change and ecosystem degradation, traditional research focused on isolated issues is no longer sufficient. Planetary Health requires a new kind of collaboration – one that cuts across academic disciplines, sectors, and national boundaries.

PHIS brings together expertise from the natural, engineering, agricultural, and health sciences to foster flexible and innovative transdisciplinary research. We aim to contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through knowledge creation, technological innovation, and the development of the next generation of leaders who can work across disciplines and with diverse stakeholders to co-create solutions for a sustainable and inclusive future.

Planetary Health Alliance (PHA)

The Center for the Planetary Health and Innovation Science (PHIS) is a proud member of the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA), a global consortium of over 400 organizations from more than 60 countries dedicated to understanding and addressing the health impacts of global environmental change.

The PHA promotes interdisciplinary research, education, and policy to advance the field of planetary health — an emerging area that recognizes the interdependence of human health and the health of Earth’s natural systems.

PHIS Vision

Creating a future where both people and the planet can thrive

At PHIS, we explore the interconnectedness of health, the environment, and society through interdisciplinary research and real-world practice.

Our aim is to co-create inclusive and sustainable solutions to both local and global challenges.
From Hiroshima—a symbol of peace and recovery—we aspire to become a hub of innovation that connects science with civil society and fosters future leaders and changemakers.

Message from PHIS Director

Toward a Sustainable Future through the Lens of Planetary Health

Our health cannot be considered in isolation from the structure of society, changes in the environment, or the overall well-being of the Earth itself. The spread of infectious diseases, health impacts from climate change, food insecurity, and declines in mental well-being—all of these are deeply intertwined with the health of our planet.

Planetary Health is an emerging field of research and action that addresses not only individual health, but also the health of societies and our planet as a whole. At the Planetary Health Innovation Science Center (PHIS), we aim to serve as a bridge—connecting science and society, and linking local and global efforts.

What is needed now is transdisciplinary collaboration—working across boundaries to respond flexibly to a rapidly changing world, and to build a future where well-being is sustained for all. From Hiroshima, a city that continues to reflect on peace and regeneration, we are committed to learning, sharing, and advancing Planetary Health for a better global society.
